Mario Cristobal had a surprise in store for Rueben Bain Jr. in the form of the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year award on Wednesday.

A video was posted by Miami football on social media with Bain walking out of a meeting room with Cristobal.

Cristobal messed with Bain a little and said the player’s parents were going to have be called. Bain’s face went from confused to excited after the Miami coach told him it was because of the honor.

“Oh wait, one more thing. I forgot to mention earlier,” said Cristobal. “I’ve still got to call your parents. Congratulations, Defensive Rookie of the Year in the ACC. Yes sir. Earned it, brother.”

Cristobal told Bain as a recruit if he committed to Miami, he would win all the freshman awards, including the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year.

“When Coach Cristobal first brought me here, he said I was gonna be the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year,” said Bain. “I was gonna win all the freshman awards and it’s here now, so I’m feeling good.”

Bain is off to a good start with Miami. He accounted for 37 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks.

Miami awaits its bowl game announcement after a 7-5 regular season finish.
