Mario Cristobal tries to explain why Tyler Van Dyke is struggling in 2022

Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was benched on Saturday evening vs. Middle Tennessee, continuing his nightmare start to the 2022 campaign.

He began the game with a pair of interceptions, including one that was returned for a pick 6. Van Dyke was relieved by Jake Garcia after Miami’s second punt in the second half, with the Canes trailing by 3 scores.

Van Dyke now has 4 touchdowns, 3 interceptions and a passer efficiency rating that is woefully below what he showed a season ago. So what has changed?

Coach Mario Cristobal attempted to answer that question in his postgame press conference after Miami’s 45-31 defeat. He acknowledged Miami’s offensive scheme change, the loss of receivers from a year ago and injuries to this year’s team.

“Scheme change,” Cristobal said. “It’s different. Some things with it are different. Obviously, 65% of his receiving production is gone and the injury to Xavier is having us develop guys that are working hard to get better.”

Here’s video of Cristobal’s answer:

Miami is off in Week 5, which means the Canes will have an opportunity to use the bye week to install Jake Garcia as quarterback if that’s what they chose to do.

Miami faces North Carolina in Week 6.
