Mario Cristobal updates Tyler Van Dyke’s status for Virginia game

Mario Cristobal is still not sure if Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke will start this week against Virginia.

Van Dyke left the 2nd quarter of Saturday’s game with an apparent upper body injury. He did not return and the Hurricanes went down in a 45-21 loss to Duke. It was an ugly loss and Van Dyke’s injury made matters worse for Miami.

Cristobal spoke to the media on Monday and revealed that Van Dyke’s status for Week 9 was in question. He was asked if Van Dyke will be healthy for Saturday’s game.

“Don’t know yet. Don’t know yet,” Cristobal said. “I know he was sore after the game, didn’t finish the game.”

When Van Dyke left the Duke game, Jake Garcia came in to replace Van Dyke. Cristobal confirmed that Garcia would be in line to start if Van Dyke cannot return in Week 9. Garcia passed for 198 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions in the loss. Garcia had problems with turning the ball over and it cost the Hurricanes.

Miami offensive coordinator Josh Gattis discussed Garcia’s preparation ahead of this week’s game.

“[Jake Garcia] is preparing to be the guy,” Gattis said.

There will be pressure on Miami’s offense to limit the number of turnovers. Miami committed 8 turnovers against Duke.

Miami will be on the road against Virginia on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET.
