Miami acknowledges COVID-19 issues, remains ‘committed’ to playing Sun Bowl

Like several other college football and basketball teams across the country, Miami is dealing with an increased number of COVID-19 cases as it prepares for the Sun Bowl.

The Hurricanes made that announcement on Tuesday afternoon via a press release. They’re still “committed” to playing Washington State in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31, the release says.

Miami’s coaching staff has undergone tremendous turnover this offseason. In addition to replacing coach Manny Diaz with Mario Cristobal, offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee left the program for the head coaching job at SMU.

It’s unclear if k

ey players like quarterback Tyler Van Dyke or running back Jaylan Knighton are amongst those who are in COVID protocols.

These two teams have met once before — at the 2015 Sun Bowl. Washington State was victorious, defeating Miami 20-14. The Hurricanes were led by interim coach Larry Scott, who was standing in for Al Golden.

Kick off is at 12:00 p.m. ET on Dec. 31.
