Miami shocked the college football recruiting world on Thursday night by picking up a commitment from 5-star cornerback Cormani McClain.

McClain is the No. 2 overall prospect in the class of 2023, per 247Sports Composite rankings. He was widely expected to pick Florida when he announced his commitment.

Instead, he’s going with the Canes. Here’s his announcement:

McClain is a complete game-changer for Miami’s 2023 recruiting class. He immediately becomes the top-ranked prospect to pick Miami this cycle. He’s the second 5-star player to do so, joining offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa.

He was also considering Alabama and had an offer from virtually every top program in the country. Instead, he picks Miami and becomes one of the Canes’ top recruits in recent memory.

This is a huge boost of momentum for a Miami program that has been struggling to put together good performances on the field. However, the Canes are still recruiting at a high level — indicating recruits are expecting things to turn around in the near future under Mario Cristobal.

Miami now has 18 commitments in the class of 2023. The group ranks No. 8 nationally, per 247Sports Composite rankings. Prior to McClain’s commitment, Miami ranked No. 12 in the country.
