Miami blasts No. 1 Houston to reach Elite Eight for 2nd straight season

Miami dominated No. 1 Houston 89-75 in the Sweet 16 on Friday night, clinching its 2nd straight appearance in the Elite Eight.

The Hurricanes had a lead at the break, but really pulled away in the 2nd half. Miami shot a staggering 52% from the floor in the win despite Houston entering this game as one of the top defensive teams in the country.

Offensively for Miami, Nijel Pack and Isaiah Wong led the way. Pack and Wong finished with 26 and 20 points, respectively, in the win. Jordan Miller, Wooga Poplar and Norchad Omier also finished in double figures.

Omier also contributed 12 rebounds and 3 assists while playing excellent defense on potential top 5 pick Jarace Walker. The Cougars’ star forward was limited to just 4-of-16 shooting on the night.

Miami’s win also secures a bit of history. I

t means that no No. 1 seed will reach the Elite Eight for the 1st time in NCAA Tournament history. Purdue and Kansas were both ousted last weekend while Alabama fell to San Diego State on Friday night.

This is Miami’s 2nd Elite Eight appearance in program history. The Canes have never reached the Final Four. Last season, they fell to eventual-champion Kansas in the Elite Eight by 26 points.

Miami will play the winner of Texas vs. Xavier on Sunday in Kansas City. Tipoff time and other details will be announced at a later time.
