Miami coach Jim Larrañaga joins elite company after Hurricanes upset Duke on the road

Miami coach Jim Larrañaga made history when the Hurricanes defeated Duke in Durham on Saturday night.

Larrañaga became just the fifth coach to have multiple victories over a top-5 Duke team on the road, according to ESPN Stats & Info. He joins Dean Smith, Gary Williams, Roy Williams and Dave Odom.

Smith and Roy Williams coached at North Carolina. Gary Williams coached at Boston College and Maryland for 18 combined seasons. Odom coached at Wake Forest from 1989-2001.

Larrañaga has been at Miami since 2011. His other top 5 win over the Blue Devils in Durham came on Jan. 13, 2015.

ff to a 5-0 start and has now won 9 straight contests. The Hurricanes are playing like one of the best teams in the ACC and are on track to earn an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Larrañaga, 72, hasn’t led Miami to the Big Dance since 2018. The Hurricanes haven’t won a tournament game since they made it to the Sweet 16 in 2016.

Miami faces Florida State on Tuesday.
