Miami was named one of seven finalists for 2023 4-star safety prospect Joenel Aguero this week.

Aguero made that announcement on Wednesday afternoon. Along with the Hurricanes, he’s considering Alabama, Texas A&M, Georgia, Florida, LSU and Ohio State.

Here’s his announcement:

Aguero is one of the top players in the country and is a potential 5-star prospect. He’s the No. 49 overall player and the No. 2 safety in the class of 2023, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

He’s listed at 6-foot, 190 pounds and attends St. John’s Prep in Lynn, Massachusetts. He’s one of four 4-star prospects from the state of Massachusetts in this cycle.

This will be a difficult recruiting battle for the Hurricanes to win. Aguero visited Georgia back in October, just a few months before the Bulldogs took home the National Championship.

Aguero did have a relationship with Miami’s previous staff — he visited campus last summer. The fact that he’s clearly still interested in the Hurricanes — despite the new coaching staff — seems like positive news for Miami.

Miami currently has two commitments in the class of 2023. The class ranks No. 5 in the ACC, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

There is no timetable for his commitment.
