Miami OC Josh Gattis gives update on Canes’ offensive line

Miami offensive coordinator Josh Gattis gave an update on the Canes’ offensive line situation on Monday afternoon.

Miami is in the process of trying to turn its O-line from a weakness into a strength. The arrival of coach Mario Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal has seemed to help so far.

However, the Canes were dealt a setback last week when it was announced star left tackle Zion Nelson would miss most of all camp — and possibly part of the regular season — after undergoing minor knee surgery in July

.

Still, the Hurricanes have some talent up front. Speaking with reporters on Monday, Gattis said the coaching staff is still trying to identify their top-5 linemen.

One key piece of this equation will be Jalen Rivers, who made 3 starts last season. According to Gattis, Rivers can play all 5 positions on the offensive line and will be a very versatile piece for the Canes this season.

Miami also returns DJ Scaife and Jakai Clark, who made 9 starts each last season. John Campbell missed the 2021 campaign due to an injury but has 6 starts in his career.

Miami opens the 2022 season with Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 3.
