Miami offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee is reportedly the top choice to take over the head coaching job at SMU.

That’s according to Yahoo!’s Pete Thamel, who notes that Lashlee is a former offensive coordinator for the Mustangs. He worked for SMU from 2018-19 before leaving for the Miami OC job.

It’s worth noting that SMU’s head coaching position isn’t officially open yet. However, current coach Sonny Dykes is expected to depart for the TCU job in the coming days.

Lashlee has done a tremendous job for the Hurricanes this season. After losing dual threat quarterback D’Eriq King early in the year to a season-ending injury, Lashlee re-made the offense around pocket passer Tyler Van Dyke.

The result has been arguably the ACC’s best offense over the last six weeks. Miami is averaging 35 points per game over that span, and players like Van Dyke and Charleston Rambo are in position to set records in Miami’s final two games.

Miami ends its regular season on Saturday vs. Duke.
