Miami QB Tyler Van Dyke discusses benching, hearing boos from home fans vs. Middle Tennessee

On Tuesday afternoon, Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke met with the media for the first time since the Canes’ stunning home loss to Middle Tennessee in Week 4.

Van Dyke was benched in that contest, with coach Mario Cristobal choosing to go to Jake Garcia to finish the game. But the Canes are sticking with Van Dyke as their starting quarterback this week, Cristobal announced on Monday.

While speaking with reporters, Van Dyke addressed the boos he received from the home crowd during the loss to Middle Tennessee.

“Obviously it was a rough day for me and the offense,” Van Dyke said. “You just have to move on from it, honestly. You just have to learn from that experience, and work even harder and get better from it.”

his season, Van Dyke has not lived up to the preseason hype. He ended last season with 6 consecutive games of 3+ touchdowns and 300+ yards passing. Through 4 games, Van Dyke has just 4 touchdowns and 809 passing yards.

Despite back-to-back losses, Miami still has a lot to play for this season. The Canes haven’t played an ACC game yet and the favorite to win the division, Pittsburgh, is coming off a loss to Georgia Tech.

Miami will face North Carolina in a pivotal Coastal division matchup on Saturday.
