Miami will open the Mario Cristobal era on Saturday afternoon against Bethune-Cookman.

Cristobal took over this offseason and revamped virtually everything about the Canes’ program from the roster to the coaching staff and even the locker rooms.

Saturday’s game is the first look for fans at what the Cristobal era will look like on the field.

What’s at stake

Miami has become one of the favorites to win the ACC Coastal and perhaps make a run at a College Football Playoff berth. Getting off to a good start vs. Bethune-Cookman on Saturday is crucial for establishing momentum for the rest of the season.

In addition to being the first game back at Miami for Cristobal, it’s also the program debut for coordinators Josh Gattis and Kevin Steele. Gattis and Steele are two of the most respected play-callers in the country.

Tyler Van Dyke will be making his first start in a season-opener for the Canes. He took over the starting job midway through last season after D’Eriq King went down with an injury. Van Dyke ended last season with six consecutive games of 300+ passing yards and 3+ touchdowns in each contest.

This will also be a debut for several newcomers via the transfer portal. Akheem Mesidor, Daryl Porter Jr., Frank Ladson, Caleb Johnson and Mitchell Agude are a few of the incoming transfers who are expected to make their Miami debuts on Saturday afternoon.
