Miami's Akheem Mesidor wins National Defensive Player of the Week award
Miami defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Virginia Tech.
Mesidor’s defensive performance in Week 7 was one for the ages. Virginia Tech’s offensive line did not have much of an answer for stopping him. His presence on the defensive line helped the Hurricanes secure a 20-14 win over the Hokies.
Mesidor finished the game with 3.5 sacks and 8 total tackles. Heading into the game, he had 1.5 sacks in 4 games this season. Mesidor disrupted Virginia Tech’s offensive game plan and had his best performance of the season.

In April, Mesidor transferred to Miami from West Virginia. He previously spent the last 2 seasons at West Virginia. In 2021, Mesidor had 4.5 sacks and 36 total tackles for West Virginia. With 5 sacks, he already has more sacks in 2022 than he had in the entire 2021 season at West Virginia.
He is making quite the 1st impression in his debut season at Miami. In addition to 5 sacks, he compiled 19 total tackles for the Hurricanes this season. Mesidor is a factor on the defensive line and will try to help out Miami’s entire defensive unit.
With the win over Virginia Tech, Miami snapped a 3-game losing streak. The Hurricanes will hope to have another great performance from Mesidor in Week 8 against Duke.
