Miami’s win over Indiana extends ACC’s decades-long Sweet 16 streak

Miami’s victory over Indiana in the Round of 32 on Sunday night was a crucial win for the ACC.

By advancing to next weekend, the Canes ensured the ACC’s streak of having at least 1 program make the Sweet 16 will continue. The ACC has had at least 1 team make the Sweet 16 in every Tournament since it expanded to 64 teams in 1985.

No other conference has a Sweet 16 streak that dates that far back:

The last time the ACC didn’t send a team to the Sweet 16 was 1979. Only Duke and North Carolina were in the field for that tournament, but they were each upset in the 2nd round. Only 40 teams made the NCAA Tournament in that era.

Miami has now made the Sweet 16 in back-to-back seasons. The Canes made it all the way to the Elite Eight last season, which w

as their deepest tournament run in program history.

Miami has now reached the Sweet 16 5 times in program history. Coach Jim Larranaga has led the Hurricanes to 4 of those appearances. Miami’s lone Sweet 16 appearance without Larranaga at the helm came back in 2000.

Besides the Canes, it was a tough NCAA Tournament for the ACC. No. 4-seeded Virginia and No. 11-seeded NC State each fell in the 1st round. No. 5-seeded Duke and No. 11-seed Pitt both bowed out in the 2nd round.

Miami will now prepare to face top-seeded Houston in the Sweet 16 on Friday.
