Tyler Van Dyke misses out, but Miami lands 3 players on preseason All-ACC team
Miami has 3 representatives on the preseason All-ACC team, which was released on Wednesday afternoon.
Tight end Will Mallory, offensive tackle Zion Nelson and punter Lou Hedly made the cut. However, quarterback Tyler Van Dyke lost out on preseason All-ACC honors to NC State’s Devin Leary.
It’s worth noting that Van Dyke — who threw for 2,194 yards and 21 touchdowns over the final 6 games of last season — beat Leary in a head-to-head matchup in 2021. Miami upset the Wolfpack 31-30 in Coral Gables. Van Dyke threw for 325 yards and 4 touchdowns in the win.
Van Dyke did finish third in preseason ACC Player of the Year voting behind Leary and Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman.
As for the Canes who did make the team, Mallory is the headliner. He, along with Georgia’s Brock Bowers and Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer, is a prime candidate to win the Mackey Award at season’s end.
Nelson is also a big name. He’s a potential first round pick in this upcoming draft and is expected to anchor Miami’s offensive line in 2022.
Hedley is the ACC’s best punter. He averaged 44.9 yards per punt last season and was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award.
Miami opens the 2022 season against Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 3.
