Dave Doeren was on ACC Network this week and discussed the Wolfpack’s upcoming offseason quarterback competition.

NC State returns quarterbacks MJ Morris and Ben Finley, both of whom gained starting experience in 2022 as the Wolfpack dealt with injuries at the position. The program also added former Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong via the transfer portal.

Doeren told Andrea Adelson and David M. Hale that he expects a good competition this offseason.

“We’re excited to have 3 healthy quarterbacks that are good players,” Doeren said. “They’re excited, they’re learning, they’re competing and they’re working well together. Just like every position on our roster, there’s gonna be guys lined up 1st string, 2nd string, 3rd string and I look forward to watching them all compete.”

Here’s video of his comments:

Armstrong is the favorite to win the starting job. He’s an experienced starter in the ACC and will be reuniting with new NC State offensive coordinator Robert Anae. Back in 2021 at Virginia, Armstrong and Anae teamed up to produce one of the best passing offenses in the country. Armstrong threw for 4,449 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Morris and Finley also have good experience. Morris helped rescue NC State’s season as a true freshman in 2022 after Devin Leary was lost for the year. When Morris went down with an injury, it was Finley who helped NC State defeat North Carolina in the final game of the regular season.

This will be one of the more interesting quarterback battles to watch in 2023.
