NC State has lofty expectations in 2022, and much of that is because of quarterback Devin Leary.

Leary was excellent a year ago and projects to be one of the top passers in the country again this season. The Wolfpack are searching for their first 10-win season since 2002.

Earlier this week, ESPN ranked the top quarterbacks in the country and put them in tiers. Leary, fresh of a 35-touchdown season, was put into the “Heisman waiting room” alongside Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke and Utah’s Cam Rising.

Only Bryce Young, CJ Stroud and Caleb Williams were ranked higher. Here’s an excerpt of David M. Hale’s analysis:

“Leary finished 2021 with 35 passing touchdowns and just five picks, while racking up 3,433 yards through the air. Only three other QBs have done that in the playoff era: Mac Jones, Marcus Mariota and Cody Kessler. Whether Leary ultimately looks more like Jones and Mariota or Duggan and Martinez likely will depend on how well he handles the now lofty expectations facing NC State in 2022.”

Leary and Van Dyke lead an excellent crop of ACC quarterbacks in 2022. That list also includes players like Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman, Louisville’s Malik Cunningham, Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong and Florida State’s Jordan Travis.

Leary is +10000 to win the Heisman Trophy, according to FanDuel.

NC State opens the 2022 season with East Carolina on Sept. 3.
