NC State lands commitment from Oklahoma transfer RB, Charlotte native

NC State has landed a talented young running back via the transfer portal.

Daylan Smothers, formerly of Oklahoma, announced on his Instagram that he is committing to the NC State Wolfpack.

Smothers was originally a 4-star prospect, per the 247Sports Composite ranking. Smothers was the No. 26 RB in the 2023 class and the No. 14 player out of West Charlotte High School in North Carolina. This move to NC State represents a homecoming of sorts, as Smothers hails from nearby Charlotte.

In 2023, Smothers appeared in 4 games for the Sooners. The back finished with 42 yards on 11 carries. Since he only played in 4 games, Smothers was able to redshirt and will have 4 seasons of eligibility remaining.

Smothers becomes the 11th prospect to commit to the Wolfpack via the transfer portal this offseason. Quarterback Grayson McCall comes over from Coastal Carolina, while fellow running back Jordan Waters was added from Duke.

Meanwhile, the Wolfpack have seen several players leave via the portal. Running backs Michael Allen and Jordan Houston, as well as wide receiver Terrell Timmons Jr are the notable losses for the Wolfpack.

Smothers will likely compete with Waters and the incumbent Kendrick Raphael for the starting job.
