NC State defeated North Carolina 30-27 in double overtime on Friday night.

The Wolfpack navigated a tense overtime period, and ultimately forced UNC into a 35-yard field goal attempt to extend the game. The kick was shanked, giving the Wolfpack the victory.

It’s a heroic effort for a Wolfpack team that was playing with Ben Finley as their starting quarterback. Finley played exceptionally well, given the circumstances.

Finley threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Crucially, he didn’t throw an interception — the same could not be said for North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye.

The win gives NC State its eighth win of the year. The Wolfpack will have a chance to get to nine wins for the second consecutive season with a bowl game victory.

It’s a devastating loss for North Carolina, who may now be unranked going into next week’s ACC Championship Game against Clemson. It’s back-to-back home losses to teams without their starting (or backup) quarterbacks for the Tar Heels.

NC State will learn its bowl destination next weekend.
