Payton Wilson will not play in the Pop-Tarts Bowl against No. 25 Kansas State next Thursday.

The star NC State linebacker shared a message with fans on social media Sunday morning revealing that he has decided to opt out of the bowl game in order to prepare for the NFL. However, he said he will still be at the game cheering his teammates on.

“Playing football at NC State and training and competing with my teammates has been an experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life,” Wilson wrote. “Now it’s time for me to start to prepare for the next chapter of my football career.”

Wilson was an all-everything defender for the Wolfpack this season. He brought home the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award, won the Bednarik and Butkus Awards, and was a unanimous All-American.

He led the ACC with 138 tackles and also paced all league defenders with 17.5 tackles for a loss. Wilson added six sacks, six pass breakups, three interceptions (one of which he returned for a score), and a forced fumble.

Without their leader in the middle, NC State will likely lean on a combination of Caden Fordham, Jaylon Scott, and Devon Betty.

NC State will be seeking win No. 10 on the season. Kickoff from Camping World Stadium in Orlando is set for 5:45 p.m. ET on ESPN.
