NC State received some good news on Tuesday morning.
Guard Terquavion Smith, who was projected to be a 1st round pick in June’s NBA Draft, announced he will be returning to Raleigh for his sophomore season.
The announcement comes just 1 day before the deadline to withdraw from the NBA Draft.
Smith had been a fast-riser in the pre-draft process as NBA scouts went back and watched his tape. His explosiveness and shot creation ability likely would have landed him in the back half of the 1st round.
Instead, he returns to Raleigh for another season under Kevin Keatts.
“I just want one more season to get everything right and just be a college student,” Smith told ESPN’s Jonathan Givony via text message
. “If things go like I expect, I won’t have to go through the combine experience the same way,” Smith said. “Everyone w
ill see my games and our team all season, we are going to make sure they are seeing something special. The NBA can wait one year, I have more work to do in the ACC first.”
As a freshman, Smith averaged 16.3 points per game and shot 36.9% from 3-point range.
This decision could have significant upside for Smith. He’s now firmly on the NBA Draft radar and could enter next season as a projected lottery pick.
NC State is still awaiting a decision from guard Dereon Seabron. The deadline to withdraw from the NBA Draft is June 1.
