2 North Carolina players earn ACC Player of the Week honors for Week 2
North Carolina took down Georgia State on Saturday to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The win wasn’t the only good news, as two Tar Heels have been named ACC Players of the Week. Cedric Gray has been recognized as Player of the Week at his LB position, while Omarion Hampton received rookie honors.

Gray has been an impact player for the Tar Heels the past two seasons. As a true freshman, Gray led the Tar Heels 100 total tackles in 2021, 25 more than anybody else on the team.
During Saturday’s action against the Panthers, Gray finished the game with 14 total tackles, two of those for a loss. In a defense that had struggling moments, Gray came shining through with some big action plays.
It’s not surprising that Omarion Hampton received rookie honors, as the true freshman rushed for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns in his very first collegiate game in Week 0. He stepped up again on Saturday to clench his second 100-plus rushing yard game of the season. Hampton had 110 rushing yards and two touchdowns, with 107 of those yards coming in the second half. Hampton’s TD in the 4th quarter ended up as the game-winning score.
The Tar Heels will need both Gray and Hampton as they take on their biggest challenge yet in Notre Dame next Saturday.
