5-star forward Matas Buzelis has set a commitment date.

The North Carolina target will choose his future program early Friday morning. He recently posted an Instagram story with a countdown to his commitment that ends at 12:01 a.m. on Friday.

In addition to the Tar Heels, Buzelis is considering Kentucky, Wake Forest, Florida State and the G-League Ignite program. The timing of the announcement is interesting — it’s likely to come near the conclusion of the 2022 NBA Draft.

Buzelis is a major target for North Carolina. He’s the No. 6 overall prospect for the class of 2023, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

North Carolina’s 2023 recruiting class is setting up to potentially be the No. 1 group in the country. The Tar Heels already have a commitment from GG Jackson, who is the No. 1 overall player in the cycle. They also have a commitment from 5-star guard Simeon Wilcher.

Last month, Buzelis discussed his potential future fit with Jackson and the Tar Heels. Both Jackson and Buzelis are projected to be excellent shooters as forwards.

Adding Buzelis would give North Carolina a trio of 5-star prospects. Only Duke has a class with anywhere near that amount of prospect pedigree.

Buzelis attends Brewster Academy in New Hampshire.
