Caleb Love, as it turns out, won’t be playing for Michigan.
The former North Carolina standout who entered the transfer portal on March 27 and later committed to the Wolverines has reportedly backed out of that commitment and re-opened his recruitment. 247Sports’ Eric Bossi was the first to report the news.
According to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander, Love did not have the necessary credits to be admitted at Michigan. Norlander also reported that a return to UNC is not believed to be on the table at this time. Regardless, he’ll become the hottest name on the transfer market once again.
Love spent 3 seasons with the Tar Heels, leading a run to the national championship game during the 2021-22 season. Last season, he averaged a career-best 16.7 points a game to go with career-highs in field goal percentage (
37.8%) and rebounding (3.7 a game) as well as a career-low in turnovers (2.4).
Still, the season was viewed as a major disappointment for both Love and the Tar Heels. UNC went from preseason No. 1 to missing the NCAA Tournament field. Though Love was able to put points on the board, he did so while shooting sub-40% from the field for the third consecutive year and saw his PER dip slightly from the season prior.
But there’s no doubt Love can help a backcourt at the high-major level.
Just not at Michigan.
