Drake Maye continues to put together an impressive season in Chapel Hill.

Heading into Week 8, Maye is considered to be on of the top passers in the entire country despite his status as a redshirt freshman. He’s thrown for 2,283 yards and 24 touchdowns in just 7 games.

His consistent run of performances has landed him at No. 4 in CBS Sports’ national QB power rankings. Here’s some analysis from CBS’ Tom Fornelli:

This kid is just the model of consistency. Every week he shows up and throws for over 300 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 10+ yards per carry. Quarterbacks usually buy gifts for their offensive linemen, but Maye should consider buying gifts for the North Carolina defense that makes sure he has to keep slinging the ball for 60 minutes.

Only Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker, Ohio State’s CJ Stroud and Alabama’s Bryce Young rank above Maye in this week’s rankings. Maye is ahead of players like USC’s Caleb Williams, Texas’ Quinn Ewers and Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman.

North Carolina’s defense has struggled this season, giving Maye extra possessions to work with. But Maye has been impressive with nearly all of those opportunities. He’s led the Tar Heels to 4 road wins already, including 2 of them without star receiver Josh Downs.

Maye has been excellent at spreading the ball around to different receivers. Already this season, 8 different UNC receivers have caught at least 10 passes and 9 different players have gone for over 100 yards. 10 different Tar Heels have a receiving touchdown so far this season.

Maye is a big reason why the Tar Heels are favored to win the ACC Coastal this season. North Carolina has the week off in Week 8 but will face Pitt at home in a crucial matchup in Week 9.
