Drake Maye enters Heisman Trophy conversation with unbelievable performance vs. Pitt
Drake Maye emphatically entered the Heisman Trophy conversation with his five-touchdown performance against Pitt on Saturday night.
The Tar Heels entered the fourth quarter trailing Pitt, but Maye didn’t blink. He led UNC to 21 unanswered points in the final stanza and a 42-24 victory.
Maye completed 34-of-44 passes for 388 yards, 5 touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also led North Carolina in rushing yards with 64 on 14 carries.
Maye was already on the cusp of the Heisman Trophy conversation — he was a +4300 long shot entering Week 9 — but now he may be front-and-center of the conversation.
On the season, Maye has thrown for 2,671 yards and 29 touchdowns while tossing only three interceptions. He’s also rushed for 442 yards and three more scores on the ground.
Ohio State’s CJ Stroud and Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker continue to be the favorites. But Maye’s performance on Saturday night has clearly swayed at least some public opinion.
Here’s some of the Heisman-related reaction to Maye’s performance vs. Pittsburgh:
He wont win it or probably not get top 3… but Drake Maye deserves Heisman talk. #UNC

So the Heisman in recent years has to go to a player on a winning team. Does that mean the nation can start recognizing Drake Maye!? #UNC #Pitt #CollegeFootball pic.twitter.com/2O66Wy2JlD

I am a Heisman voter. If the season ended today and I had to fill out my ballot, Drake Maye would be on it. Not sure where, but it would definitely be somewhere.

UNC passed the test. And Drake Maye looks like he’s at least getting invited to the Heisman ceremony.

Drake Maye isn’t gonna get the Heisman love he deserves because his team isn’t a title contender
But man… that kid is really, really good.

Drake Maye is the heisman and it’s not really a question at this point.

Drake Maye is a top-5 QB in the nation and deserves to be on every mid-season Heisman short list.

Drake Maye should at least be in NYC for the Heisman ceremony.

Drake Maye is already the best QB in Carolina Football history in my opinion. At this pace he should be in NYC for the Heisman Trophy presentation. #GoHeels
