Drake Maye received a shoutout from the College GameDay crew as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate.

North Carolina has a 3-0 record and it is due in part to Maye’s early season success. North Carolina has averaged 51.3 points per game.

For Maye, he could put his stamp on the season before September ends. ESPN College GameDay analyst Desmond Howard discussed Maye’s potential Heisman candidacy.

“My Heisman campaign started against Notre Dame,” Howard said. “The week before, I scored 4 touchdowns against BC. Nobody cared. The next week I scored 2 touchdowns against Notre Dame, I’m on the cover of Sports Illustrated, I’m a Heisman candidate. It can start today for this young man.”

Howard won the award in 1991 with Michigan. He referenced how quickly something can change for a player to be in the mix for the Heisman — especially against a program like Notre Dame.

In 3 games, Maye has recorded 11 touchdowns, 1 interception, and 930 passing yards. In North Carolina’s last game, Maye threw for 284 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception over Georgia State. He entered last game with 9 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. Maye has taken care of the ball and allowed the offense to be a factor.

Maye could start his Heisman campaign today against Notre Dame at 3:30 p.m. ET.
