Drake Maye is entering what could be his final season of college football.

After impressing fans and scouts a year ago, Maye is widely considered to be in the mix to go No. 1 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. On Wednesday, ESPN NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper listed Maye at No. 4 in his debut big board for the 2024 draft class.

Maye is behind USC quarterback Caleb Williams, Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and Penn State offensive tackle Olumuyiwa Fashanu.

Here’s an excerpt of Kiper’s analysis on Maye:

Maye had a fantastic debut season as the starter at UNC, throwing for 4,321 yards with 38 touchdowns and seven picks. He looks the part of a big-time NFL signal-caller. Maye can make every throw with ease. He’s accurate on the move and can pick up first downs with his legs. He varies his pass speeds really well — he knows when to take a little off to make it easier for his receivers. He has outstanding touch on vertical throws.

North Carolina has not had a player go in the 1st round of the NFL Draft since Mitchell Trubisky went No. 2 overall in 2017.

Maye is expected to lead a strong North Carolina team again in 2023. The Tar Heels won 9 games last year and could take another step forward with improved results on defense.

North Carolina’s 2023 regular season win total is set at 8, according to DraftKings. Online North Carolina sports betting is expected to be legal by late 2023 or early 2024.

North Carolina will open the 2023 season against South Carolina on Saturday night in Charlotte.
