ESPN’s FPI predicts the remaining games on North Carolina’s schedule
North Carolina is enjoying a well-earned week off in Week 8.
The Tar Heels will be back in action next week as they look to widen their lead in the ACC Coastal division standings.
According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, North Carolina is the overwhelming favorite to win the Coastal. FPI is giving the Tar Heels an 80.9% chance to win the division.
FPI also sees UNC as the favorite in 4 of its 5 remaining games. The only exception is North Carolina’s road trip to Wake Forest in mid-November.
Here is the percentage chance UNC has to win each of its remaining games, per FPI:
- Oct. 29: vs. Pittsburgh — 64.6%
- Nov. 5: at Virginia — 70.6%
- Nov. 12: at Wake Forest — 37.1%
- Nov. 19: vs Georgia Tech — 86%
- Nov. 25: vs. NC State — 54.1%
North Carolina’s matchup with Pittsburgh next week is pivotal. If UNC wins that game, it will have the tiebreaker over its two leading contenders in the Coastal. North Carolina already defeated Miami earlier this season.
North Carolina’s Thanksgiving-weekend matchup with NC State should be an advantageous matchup for the Tar Heels. FPI does not factor in injuries, so Devin Leary’s season-ending surgery is not accounted for in that projection.
Overall, FPI is projecting North Carolina to finish the season with just over 9 wins. The Tar Heels would have a chance to pick up their 10th win in a bowl game. UNC has not won 10 games in a single campaign since the 2015 season. Prior to that campaign, it hadn’t happened since 1997 — Mack Brown’s final year in Chapel Hill during his first stint.
North Carolina and Pitt kick off at 8:00 p.m. ET next weekend.
