North Carolina lost 45-32 to Notre Dame on Saturday night, picking up its first loss of the 2022 season.

Notre Dame entered this game with a sputtering offense that was outside the top 100 nationally in most offensive categories. But the Fighting Irish had no issues vs. UNC’s leaky defense.

Notre Dame gained 576 yards — by far its most of the season — while backup Drew Pyne threw for a career-high 289 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Irish rushed for 5.6 yards per carry and gained 6.8 yards per play.

Notre Dame converted 8-of-14 third down attempts and scored on 4-of-5 trips to the red zone. The Irish held the ball for over 38 minutes of game time.

Put simply, it was another defensive disaster for North Carolina. Defensive coordinator Gene Chizik continues to draw scrutiny for his unit’s play. And while UNC’s defense has virtually always struggled in the Mack Brown era, things seem to be going in the wrong direction.

After — and during — the game, North Carolina cans called for Chizik to be fired. Here’s some of that reaction:
