Joel Klatt explains how North Carolina can make the College Football Playoff
Joel Klatt believes the North Carolina Tar Heels could surprise some people. The college football insider made a case for the Tar Heels possibly making the College Football Playoff.
“Watch out for North Carolina. North Carolina is a team that at the beginning of the year, a lot of us — me included — thought, ‘Well, it’s not a great team, but they’ve got a great quarterback.’ Let’s be honest. They’re pretty good. I think their defense is decent. They only have to be average because they have Drake Maye,” explained Klatt.
Maye has led the Tar Heels to a 5-0 record, with a 2-0 mark in ACC play. The Maye-led Tar Heels also sport the No. 11 passing offense thus far.
“The more I watch Drake Maye, the more I’m impressed,” declared Klatt. “I see this team and it’s hard for me not to just immediately think to myself this quarterback can take them a long way. He’s really good.”
Not only do the Tar Heels have an elite QB, but their schedule is also favorable.
“Along with Louisville, they also do not play Florida State down the stretch. And, by the way, Louisville doesn’t play North Carolina. These three undefeateds in the ACC are gonna miss each other,” Klatt explained. “This is probably the toughest road in the ACC but if they can get through this, even if they were to lose at Clemson and still go to the ACC championship game and win, they would have enough.”
The Tar Heels have a tough test in Week 7 againt Miami, but things lighten up after that. The Tar Heels have Virginia, Georgia Tech, and Campbell after the battle with the Hurricanes.
The team ends the season against Duke, Clemson, and NC State.
