Josh Downs injury: North Carolina gives update on star receiver
North Carolina receiver Josh Downs missed the Tar Heels’ dramatic win over App State in Week 1 and his status for Week 2 is still up in the air.
Downs is dealing with a lower body injury and is one of a few key North Carolina players who will be “game time decisions” this weekend, the program has announced.
Running back Caleb Hood and offensive lineman Spencer Rolland are also set to be game-time decisions this weekend.

Downs is arguably North Carolina’s best player after breaking out for 1,335 yards in 2021. However, the Tar Heels were able to survive a tough road test in Boone in Week 1 without him.
Receiver Kobe Paysour stepped up in Downs’ place, catching 8 passes for 92 yards and 1 touchdown.
Quarterback Drake Maye did a good job of navigating this situation and spreading the ball around across UNC’s wide receiver corps. JJ Jones, Bryson Nesbitt and DJ Jones all caught touchdown passes in the win.
Downs initially suffered this injury while catching a touchdown pass vs. Florida A&M in Week 0.
North Carolina opened as an 8 point favorite over Georgia State in Week 2.
