Mack Brown announced on Monday that wide receiver Justin Olson will not return to the program next season.

Brown revealed that Olson will enter the transfer portal this week. Despite entering the transfer portal, Olson will remain at the school for the spring semester and will earn his degree in May.

Olson, who was with the program since 2019, will be looking for a new college football destination in 2023. As a freshman in 2019, Olson redshirted that season and only played in 1 game. His role increased as a redshirt freshman in 2020 with 7 appearances in that season.

In the 2021 season, he played in all 13 games for the Tar Heels. He finished 2021 with 9 receptions for 143 receiving yards and 1 touchdown. In 2022, he played in 10 games. His impact as a receiver diminished with 1 reception for 4 receiving yards for the entire season.

He ended his tenure at North Carolina with 10 receptions, 147 receiving yards, and 1 touchdown in 31 games. His next school will be getting a player who can split time as a wide receiver and a special teams player. Olson could try to find somewhere that will use him more as a wide receiver than as a special teams player.

North Carolina closed out the the 2022 season with a 9-5 record.
