Through 2 games with Gene Chizik in charge, North Carolina’s defense has given plenty of reasons to be concerned.

The Tar Heels’ defense let up an astounding 40 4th-quarter points in UNC’s dramatic win over App State this week — the most in an FBS game since at least 2015.

North Carolina was able to hang on to the win anyways, but UNC’s defense remains an issue moving forward. Speaking with reporters on Monday, coach Mack Brown gave his full vote of confidence to Chizik to figure things out.

“I’ve got tremendous confidence in Gene Chizik,” Brown said at his weekly press conference.

North Carolina has given up 6.69 yards per play so far this season — which is No. 13 in the ACC. UNC is ahead of only Louisville, who gave up 6.8 yards per play in its season-opening blowout loss to Syracuse this weekend.

Brown said North Carolina’s defense was “embarrassed” after going over film of the App State game. He identified a lengthy list of issues that UNC will hope to get figured out in the coming weeks.

North Carolina faces Georgia State on the road in Week 2.
