New UNC CB Lejond Cavazos explains how Armando Bacot recruited him to Chapel Hill
Mack Brown’s latest transfer addition wouldn’t have been possible without the help of UNC star basketball player Armando Bacot.
Last month, the Tar Heels landed a commitment from former Ohio State cornerback Lejond Cavazos. Earlier this week, Cavazos revealed that he wasn’t considering UNC until he heard from Bacot.
“I’m not gonna lie, before Mando, I didn’t really think about North Carolina,” Cavazos told Sports Illustrated. “He started hitting me up and from there I don’t know what happened (laughing). He’s like my brother, I trust him and I’m glad I get to be with him again.”
Cavazos and Bacot are longtime friends from their time together at IMG Academy. Bacot was a year older, but they still connected and have stayed in touch.
“I got one of my best friends out there with me so I’m happy to be there,” Cavazos added. “He said they wanted me there and was telling me everything about the school and Chapel Hill. I didn’t know what to expect, I hadn’t even been to North Carolina before that.”

Cavazos was a major addition for North Carolina, who is looking for immediate help at cornerback. He was a 4-star prospect in the class of 2020 and should be ready to contribute early on in his UNC career.
It’s been a busy offseason for Bacot, who is also appearing in Season 3 of the Netflix show Outer Banks.
UNC opens the 2022 season with Florida A&M on Aug. 27.
