North Carolina cruised to the ACC Tournament title on Sunday afternoon, beating rival NC State 9-5.

The win means the Tar Heels have officially secured a berth into the NCAA Tournament. They will learn their Regional group on Monday when the NCAA announces the Field of 64.

UNC’s pitching was excellent as it stalled an NC State offense that had been red-hot in Charlotte this week. Max Carlson allowed 3 runs over 5 innings. The Heels’ bullpen then finished the game without allowing an earned run over the final 4 frames.

Offensively, UNC was led by Vance Honeycutt. He hit 2 home runs and drove in 5, helping the Tar Heels to a 7-1 lead after 2 innings.

He also became the first player in North Carolina history to have 20 homers and 20 stolen bases in the same season.

This ends a potential storybook ending for NC State. The Wolfpack entered this week on the NCAA Tournament bubble before beating Wake Forest, Miami and Pitt en route to the title game.

However, the Wolfpack are still expected to be included in the Field of 64.

This is the 8th ACC Baseball Tournament title in UNC history.
