North Carolina has ended Wake Forest’s perfect season.

The Tar Heels scored 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to seal a 58-55 win over the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest is now 8-1 and is effectively eliminated from College Football Playoff consideration.

UNC quarterback Sam Howell was exceptional through the air and on the ground, but running back Ty Chandler stole the show. He rushed the ball 22 times for a staggering 213 yards and 4 touchdowns in the win.

Chandler’s final score of the game put the Tar Heels up by 10 with under 90 seconds remaining. Here’s that play:

Wake Forest marched down the field and scored a TD with 37 seconds remaining, but it was too little, too late.

North Carolina’s comeback marks its second straight year to overcome a major deficit over the Demon Deacons. The Tar Heels trailed 45-27 at one point in the second half tonight and trailed 45-24 in the second half last season.

Because this was technically a nonconference game, the ACC picture remains unchanged. Wake Forest still controls its own destiny and will likely win the Atlantic division if it can top North Carolina State next weekend.

North Carolina moves to 5-4 on the year and can clinch bowl eligibility next week vs. Pittsburgh.
