North Carolina lost a close game to No. 14 Kentucky on Saturday night in the CBS Sports Classic.

The Wildcats led for most of the game, but UNC staged a late comeback — and briefly took the lead with just over 5 minutes in the game — to make things interesting. Elliot Cadeau turned the ball over with under 10 seconds remaining and Kentucky was able to ice the game with a free throw. UK won by the final score of 87-83.

RJ Davis was the star of the show for UNC. He scored 27 points on 8-of-18 shooting and made a couple of 3-pointers in crunch time to stay within striking distance of the Wildcats. He also led the team with 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

Davis’ big game helped make up for a tough performance from Armando Bacot. The Tar Heels big man struggled in this one as he turned the ball over 6 times and only attempted 4 shots from the field. Bacot finished with 9 points, 6 rebounds and 0 assists.

Offensive rebounds were a big problem for Carolina in this game. Kentucky grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and turned those boards in 15 second-chance points.

This is Carolina’s third loss of the season so far. The Tar Heels have also dropped nonconference games against Villanova and UConn so far this season.

The Tar Heels will face Oklahoma on Wednesday night in a top-25 matchup.
