North Carolina has secured a transfer linebacker from an ACC rival.
Amari Gainer, formerly of Florida State, took to Twitter on Friday to announce his decision to commit to the Tar Heels. Gainer spent the previous 4 seasons playing for Florida State. Gainer’s most effective season was his freshman year in 2019.
In that season, Gainer collected 69 tackles and 3.5 sacks. In 2022, Gainer only played in 7 games due to a lower-leg injury. He concluded the season with 17 tackles and 1 sack.

The Tar Heel defense was consistently gashed in 2022, as the unit finished 115th in total defense. In a bid to improve, the Tar Heels have added several players via the transfer portal.
Joining Gainer are CB Armani Chatman, S Derrik Allen, and CB Alijah Huzzie as defensive transfers to Chapel Hill for the 2023 season.
