North Carolina linked to high-profile transfer, potential starter for next season
North Carolina has been in contact with Baylor transfer forward Matthew Mayer, according to a report.
College basketball insider Jeff Goodman named the Tar Heels as one of the programs who have reached out since he entered the transfer portal. In addition to North Carolina, Mayer has also heard from Texas Tech, USC, Memphis, Alabama and Arkansas, amongst others.
Baylor transfer Matthew Mayer has heard from Texas Tech, UNC, USC, Memphis, Alabama, Arkansas and Illinois, among others, he told me.
Mayer is currently working out in Chicago. Still undecided whether to stay in NBA Draft or return to college.

If UNC is able to land Mayer, he’d be a perfect fit to replace outgoing senior Brady Manek. Mayer spent the last 4 years at Baylor and won the National Championship in 2021.
He’s also a better athlete than Manek and more-than-capable of making 3-pointers. He’s made 34.5% of 3-point attempts in his collegiate career.
On Wednesday, UNC center Armando Bacot tweeted at Meyer in an attempt to bring the former Baylor standout to Chapel Hill.
It’s worth noting that Mayer is also considering a professional career and could decide to remain in the draft. There is no timetable for his decision.
