North Carolina loses commitment from 4-star linebacker

North Carolina lost a commitment from one of its top prospects on Thursday morning.

4-star linebacker Kaveion Keys announced he is re-opening his recruitment. Keys had been committed to North Carolina since August.

Here’s his announcement:

“After countless hours of discussion, I feel like the best thing to do for my future is to decommit from the University of North Carolina and open my recruitment,” Keys wrote in-part.

The decision comes as Penn State has been ramping up its recruitment of Keys. The Nittany Lions are now viewed as the favorite to land Keys, according to a CrystalBall projection from 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong.

Keys is the No. 318 overall player in the country, according to 247Sports Composite r

ankings. Before decommitting, he was the fourth highest-ranked prospect in North Carolina’s recruiting class.

The Tar Heels have recruited as well as anyone in the ACC in recent years, but they’ve taken a step back in the class of 2023. They currently have 17 commitments and the No. 25-ranked class, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

However, there’s still time for UNC to add to its 2023 recruiting class. The Tar Heels may also decide to use their available scholarships in the transfer portal.
