North Carolina remains in the mix for Baylor transfer forward Matthew Mayer.

The Tar Heels made Mayer’s list of final 4 teams, he announced on Thursday via college basketball insider Jeff Goodman. Mayer is also considering Illinois, Memphis and Texas Tech.

North Carolina has been recruiting Mayer for the last few weeks. He’d likely slot into the Tar Heels’ starting lineup in place of Brady Manek, who is out of collegiate eligibility.

Mayer spent the past 4 seasons at Baylor and was a big part of the Bears’ 2020 National Championship team. He tested the NBA Draft waters this summer but is expected to play college basketball in 2022-23.

UNC big man Armando Bacot has also been active in recruiting Mayer. He sent out this tweet earlier this month:

Mayer isn’t quite as good of a shooter as Manek was, but he makes up for that in other areas. He’s a strong defender and a good passer in addition to being a better overall athlete. Crucially, he is comfortable shooting it from deep and has made 34.5% of his 3-point tries in his career.

There is no timetable for Mayer’s commitment.
