North Carolina received a commitment from defensive back Alijah Huzzie out of the transfer portal on Sunday night.

Huzzie was a highly-touted transfer recruit from East Tennessee State. He will be making the jump from the FCS to the ACC in 2023. This will be a key addition to the North Carolina’s secondary.

Here’s his announcement:

During his time at East Tennessee State, Huzzie was an impact player on defense. In 2022, Huzzie recorded 59 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 6 interceptions, and 16 pass breakups. He finished his time at ETSU with 12 interceptions and 66 total tackles.

Huzzie was one of the best defensive backs in the FCS and he was recognized for his excellence. Huzzie was an FCS first-team AP All-America selection. He was a defensive force in the FCS and he will have 2 years of eligibility remaining at North Carolina.

UNC defensive coordinator Gene Chizik will hope to make improvements to the defense in 2023. North Carolina’s defense surrendered 31 points per game and 403 yards per game to opponents in 2022. Huzzie could be a solution to slowing down opposing offenses next season.

North Carolina will close out the season against Oregon in the Holiday Bowl on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
