North Carolina QB Drake Maye throws major shade at NC State

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is already stoking the flames for his first rivalry matchup with NC State later this fall.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday evening, Maye was asked about his decision to play college football in his home state. His answer included a shot at NC State fans and the Wolfpack’s academic standards.

“I didn’t want to miss out on the home state,” said Maye, who at one point was committed to Alabama. “Whether you want to admit it or not, growing up in Carolina, you’re gonna be a Carolina fan. Some people may say State, but really people go to State just can’t get into Carolina.”

Here’s the video:

North Carolina hosts its in-state rivals this season, with that game set to be played on Nov. 25. However, Maye — a redshirt freshman — will have to play in Raleigh next season.

UNC is 68-37-6 all-time against NC State. However, the Wolfpack won last year’s game and have won 4 of the last 6 meetings between these programs.

Maye and the Tar Heels will be in action this weekend against Notre Dame.
