North Carolina reportedly loses starting punter to longterm injury
North Carolina punter Ben Kiernan will miss the remainder of the 2023 season, according to a report.
Kiernan was injured in UNC’s win over Syracuse last week as he attempted to pick up a first down after the Orange initially blocked his punt. The severity of his injury was first reported by Inside Carolina on Saturday before the Tar Heels take on Miami.
Here’s the play where it’s believed Kiernan suffered the season-ending injury:

Kiernan is a big loss for the Tar Heels as he’s one of the better punters in the ACC. He named third team all-ACC last season for his efforts in 2022.
It’s unclear who will start at punter for Carolina this week, but one option could be redshirt sophomore Cole Maynard. The North Carolina native has punted once in each of the past two seasons. He’s also received a lot of playing time in the past on UNC’s special teams units as as the holder.
North Carolina and Miami will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night.
