North Carolina suffered its first defeat of the season on Friday night to Iowa State.

The No. 1 Tar Heels were big favorites to win this game, but a late charge by the Cyclones was enough to pull off the upset. UNC had a seven point lead with 3:31 in the game, but couldn’t close the game.

Iowa State’s Caleb Grill sunk seven 3-pointers in the win. He scored a game-high 31 points. Only two other Iowa State players scored in double figures.

RJ Davis led North Carolina with 15 points. Armando Bacot (13 points) and Caleb Love (12 points) also scored in double figures. Bacot added a team-high nine rebounds.

The loss will knock North Carolina off of its No. 1 ranking the AP Poll when the new poll is released on Monday.

However, the Tar Heels still have plenty of opportunities to pick up big wins in nonconference play. They will face either Michigan State or Oregon in the final game of the PK85 in Portland on Sunday. They also have games remaining against teams like Indiana, Ohio State and Michigan on their nonconference schedule.

Tipoff of the third place game in the PK85 is at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
