North Carolina defeated App State 40-34 on Saturday evening in Chapel Hill.

It was closer than many predicted — UNC needed double overtime to secure the win after being favored by nearly 3 touchdowns against the Mountaineers.

Omarion Hampton and Drake Maye both scored rushing touchdowns in overtime.

Maye was inefficient as a passer in UNC’s win, although he did score the game-winning touchdown. He finished the game with 208 yards and 0 touchdowns on 30 pass attempts.

Instead, it was Hampton who stole the show offensively. Hampton went for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win. His day included a career-high 68-yard touchdown run that put UNC on the board in the first half.

It was a disappointing night for UNC’s defense, which allowed the Mountaineers to gain 5.7 yards per play. App State also went 8-for-17 on 3rd down.

Despite the struggles on defense this week, it’s a big win for a UNC program that now has plenty of momentum as it turns to Week 3. North Carolina is now 3-1 all-time against App State.

UNC will host Minnesota in Week 3.
