North Carolina transfer target Matthew Mayer is nearing a decision.

Mayer told Inside Carolina on Friday that he expects to make a decision, “within the next week.”

Mayer would be a perfect fit for North Carolina and would likely slot in as the Tar Heels’ starting power forward. He would replace Brady Manek, who is out of collegiate eligibility.

Mayer is coming off a 4-year career at Baylor where he was a key member of the Bears’ 2020 National Championship team. He spent the last few weeks receiving feedback from NBA evaluators before ultimately choosing to return to school for another season.

Last season, Mayer averaged 9.8 points and 5 rebounds per game while playing solid defense. He’s a career 34.5% shooter from 3-point range.

North Carolina is one of 4 remaining schools that Mayer is considering. The rest of his top 4 includes Illinois, Memphis and Texas Tech.

Aside from Manek, all 4 of UNC’s other starters have already announced their return for the 2022-23 season.
