Puff Johnson has decided to enter the transfer portal, according to a report.

On3’s Joe Tipton was 1st to report that news on Wednesday morning. Johnson just finished his 3rd season with the Tar Heels.

Johnson has been a significant contributor for the Tar Heels over the past couple of seasons. He played in 65 games for UNC, mostly coming off the bench.

This past season, Johnson played in 27 games and started 2 contests. He averaged 4.1 points and 2.7 rebounds per game for the Tar Heels.

Johnson was a key player on Carolina’s run to the National Championship Game in 2022. He scored 11 points off the bench in the title game against Kansas.

Johnson is the younger brother of former UNC star and current Brooklyn Nets player Cam Johnson.

What this means for North Carolina

Johnson joins a growing list of bench players at Carolina who have chosen to enter the portal this offseason. Dontrez Styles, Tyler Nickel and Justin McKoy have all entered the portal so far.

It’s also unclear if any of UNC’s longtime starters will return to the program next season. Carolina could be looking at a full-scale rebuild heading into the 2023-24 campaign.

If UNC does end up with a young team next season, expect players like Seth Trimble and Jalen Washington to have big roles in 2023-24. The Tar Heels have also signed a pair of 4-star prospects in the class of 2023: guard Simeon Wilcher and forward Zayden High.

North Carolina is expected to be active in the transfer portal as well this offseason.
