Sam Howell didn’t take long to make his name known in the NFL.

The former North Carolina legend threw a touchdown pass on his first-ever passing attempt on Sunday afternoon. It was a 16-yard pass to Terry McLaurin to give his Washington Commanders a 7-0 lead over the Cowboys.

Here’s the play:

Howell earned the start this week as Washington is trying to see what it has in its rookie quarterback. This is Howell’s first start of the season. He was picked by Washington in the 5th round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Washington has been eliminated from playoff contention, but the Commanders are still searching for their quarterback of the future. Carson Wentz’s contract includes an opt-out after this season.

Howell left Chapel Hill with multiple career passing records. He threw for 10,283 yards and 92 touchdowns during his time with the Tar Heels.
